Footnotes

  • Starting in 1967 and over the next twenty years, Richard Diebenkorn created his famous Ocean Park series, named for the neighborhood in Santa Monica, California where he lived. His paintings and subsequent prints during this period were abstracted landscapes of light and color inspired by views of the beachfront community outside his studio window. One of his rare horizontal compositions, Indigo Horizontal, created at the end of the series (he would move away in 1988) has an atmospheric and intuitive quality that transcends the formal geometry of his earlier works. In his catalogue essay on Diebenkorn's drawings, John Elderfeld, chief curator emeritus of painting and sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, refers to this late period as the artist's "dismantling [of] the characteristic Ocean Park scaffolding."*
