Footnotes

  • Rigged as a topsail schooner, the elegant Sea Bird was built for F.G. Renouf of St. Helier at St. Aubin (Jersey) in 1873. Registered at 79 tons gross (71 net) and measuring 79 feet in length with a 19 foot beam, she was skippered by her owner who had previously owned the 59-ton Jersey cutter London and traded her to the Mediterranean ports. His new command, Sea Bird, stayed closer to home and traded mostly to the nearby French coast, at least at the start of her career. Within a few years – for reasons unknown – Renouf sold Sea Bird to E. Oldridge who appointed Captain George Noel to command her, and she was last recorded trading in 1882.

The available evidence suggests that Captain Renouf, who lived in Belmont Road, St. Helier, and was regarded as a 'man of substance', probably commissioned this portrait of Sea Bird to mark her completion for sea in 1873.
